Review: Scottish field

The Murray Arms review by Malcolm Ferris-McCulloch and Richard White, with Willow the dog from Largs on behalf of Scottish Field magazine.

Wow, what can we say! This was a wonderful experience. After a beautiful journey south through the Dumfries and Galloway countryside, with blue sky and sunshine all the way, we arrived at the Murray Arms in Gatehouse of Fleet. The historic accommodation is situated at the top of the town’s main street, beside a pretty clock tower. The Murray Arms has been recently refurbished to an incredible high standard of quality and design, with particular attention to detail, (loved the thistle ends on the stair rods!). Our room was sumptuous and tastefully decorated, and our dog, Willow, had her own large, anti-anxiety bed. There is also a connection here with one of the rooms to the Scottish bard, Robert Burns, who wrote, ‘Scots Wha Hae’, during a visit.

For anyone looking to pursue some outdoor activities, the Murray Arms is a good base. Only a short drive, cycle or walk to the Solway coast for canoeing or fishing, and inland to forest walks or bird watching in outstanding countryside.

Our evening began with a pristine local taxi, to a stunning, state of the art, restaurant called ‘Gather’. The restaurant and the breath-taking wedding venue, both sit proudly on the hillside, and boast jaw dropping views over the Solway Firth towards the silhouette of the Isle of Man. We were greeted by the front of house Manager, Massimo, who was delightfully welcoming and professional. The food, wine and service were all exquisite, together with a unique and tempting menu, that would appeal to all tastes.

The following morning we were served with a generously portioned and delicious breakfast. Afterwards, the owner, Vicky introduced herself, and we shared our stay experience with her. We learned a little of the history and journey of the quality business. The whole business package here is a real gem for this stunning part of Scotland. It needs to be experienced!
