Gravel Greatness: Explore Cycling Paradise from The Murray Arms

This May, the quiet roads, rugged hills, and winding forest trails of Dumfries and Galloway will come alive with the buzz of tyres and the thrill of competition. The Gralloch – the UK’s first UCI Gravel World Series event – returns to Galloway Forest Park on from the 16th – 18th May, and it’s not alone. The region will also host the Raiders Gravel Festival, putting Dumfries and Galloway firmly on the map for world-class gravel racing and off-road cycling adventures.

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist chasing UCI points, a gravel-curious adventurer, or simply here to soak up the atmosphere and cheer from the sidelines, The Murray Arms Hotel in Gatehouse of Fleet is the perfect base for your cycling escape.

Gravel Riding Goes Global – Right Here in Gatehouse

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Galloway Hills, The Gralloch offers professionally marked gravel routes through the heart of the forest, challenging climbs, fast descents, and unforgettable views. The event draws elite riders and passionate amateurs alike from all over the world, all competing for a spot in the Gravel World Championships.

But gravel glory isn’t confined to one weekend. Galloway is packed with exceptional cycling terrain year-round. To help showcase the very best of it, we caught up with local experts Warren and Esther from Galloway Cycling Holidays, who shared their insider knowledge of the top cycling routes and the joy of exploring this stunning corner of Scotland by bike.

No Lycra? No Problem

“Do you need to be a pro cyclist to explore Dumfries & Galloway by bike?”

Not at all, says Warren. “You don’t have to be a great cyclist, not even a good one – and you can always find something rewarding here in terms of cycle routes.”

Whether you’re on a carbon-framed gravel machine or an electric bike with a picnic packed, there’s adventure to be had for every level. If you’re new to the area or unsure of your way, Galloway Cycling Holidays can even guide you through the forest, avoiding what they call “navigation anxiety.”

“No one leaves Galloway unimpressed,” says Esther. “And as you now know, it is world class.”

From The Murray Arms to the Mountains

Situated in the heart of Gatehouse of Fleet – the gateway to the Galloway Forest – The Murray Arms is ideally positioned to start your cycling adventure without ever touching the A75. From our doorstep, you’ll find gravel routes, coastal trails, and moorland rides that lead deep into the hills.

Warren and Esther put it best:

“You can get lost here and have a great day. Just don’t use the A75 as a shortcut – Google Maps doesn’t always know best!”

Some of their top local routes include:

🚴 Coastal Views Route

An easy ride through Cally Woods leads to some of the best beaches in Scotland. Pedal through quiet lanes past golden sands and views to the Isle of Man. Continue along this coast of Vikings, pirates, and smugglers to Kirkcudbright before looping back for a full-day adventure.

🚵 World-Class Gravel

Turn right from The Murray Arms and head into the forest for some of the finest gravel routes in Europe. When Warren first called it “world class,” even he wasn’t sure. But just three years and one email later – here we are, hosting the UCI Gravel World Series event in Gatehouse. Proof that dreams really do ride.

Clatteringshaws Loch Loop

A scenic gravel ride to Clatteringshaws Café, out via Laurieston Road and back through the Big Water of Fleet Viaduct. Enjoy a café stop with a view of the mountains – and on a clear day, the snow-capped peaks and skylark song might just make it your favourite ride yet
